الرحلة هي عين الجغرافيا المبصرة، هكذا يمكن أن تربط الرحلة بين الجغرافيا والأدب. ففي أدب الرحلات يمزج الإنسان الناظر بين وصفه للوقائع المادية التي يبصرها على الأرض وبين انطباعاته الذاتية التي تتولد نتيجة حالة الاغتراب التي يحياها أثناء كتابة هذا النوع من النصوص. وقد اشتهرت الحضارة العربية والإسلامية بأدب الرحلات، فظهر رجال أمثال المسعودي والمقدسي والإدريسي الأندلسي وابن الجبير وابن بطوطة وغيرهم من الرجال الذين وصفوا الأقاليم، وصالوا وجالوا في أرجاء المعمورة، ليقدِّموا لنا صورة حيَّة لعصرهم، ووصفًا دقيقًا لعادات وتقاليد الشعوب والقبائل. ورغم أن عصر المازني شهد تقدمًا في وسائل الاتصالات ونجاحًا في التقريب بين البشر في كثير من أنحاء هذا الكوكب، إلا أن الرحلة تبقى عنده أعذب في المعنى، وأوقع في النفس، وأصدق في الخبر. لذلك أراد المازني لكتابه «رحلة إلى الحجاز» أن يكون تعبيرًا عن الاستمرارية التاريخية لهذا النوع من الكتابة في الأدب العربي الحديث
