استيقظ معتز من نومه. فتح عينيه خائفاً، يستشعر خطراً. راح يمسح بيديه تراب الأرض من تحته. تعجّب من السّماء الزّرقاء المليئة بالغيوم. استقبل أنفه رائحة الهواء العليل المُنعش للرّئتين. قام واعتدل جالساً ليرى البحر من جهةٍ منصتاً لأمواجه الخفيفة ولصيحات طيور النّورس، وسفينة خشبيّة من جهة أخرى. ومن جهة ثالثة منصور، ليث، راشد، أسامة، علاء، ناصر، خليفة، إبراهيم، حمزة، عادل، وعماد، «مسدّحين»، على الشّاطئ، وأجسادهم أشتات متباعدة. جميعهم غائبون عن الوعي. فرقع عظام رقبته وأسفل ظهره، ثم قام ليتفحّص المكان بإمعان. أحسّ بإنهاك في جسده. أخذ نفساً عميقاً ليملأ رئتيه من انتعاش المحيط. أجزاء الذاكرة المشتتة شرعت تلتم على بعضها كالنسيج. تذكر عندما كان في الثانوية، ثم سُحب إلى الجدر، وبعدها هوى إلى حفرة سوداء تحت سماء برتقالية، ثم استيقظ في منزله، وذهب إلى مجمع الأڤينيوز ليكمل قراءة كتاب في مقهى، ثم ظهر جنود مقنعون أثاروا ذعراً. وبعد ذلك كلّه، قَفْزُ ناصر إلى البوابة التي خرج منها الجنود، وتغطية البياض الذي لف كل شيء.
كان ذلك كلّه قبل أن يستيقظ على هذا الشّاطئ الرملي. وقف منتصباً ثم هرول نحو ناصر المُغمى عليه والمُلقى على رمال الشاطئ. أمام ناصر، جلس على ركبتيه، وأخذ يهز جسده ويناديه، «ناصر، قوم!» لم يستجب ناصر لتلك المحاولة البائسة. صفعه معتز بضع صفعات خفيفة على خديّه الأيمن والأيسر. كان كالجثة الهامدة التي لا روح فيها. معتز اقترب بإذنه من صدره واستمع إلى دقات قلبه. كان قلبه ينبض. «معناته حيْ.»
نظر معتز إلى البحر وهو يفكّر بحل. قام ومشى. عيناه تفحّصتا السفينة العملاقة الراسية. استوقفه علم أسود يرفرف فوق سارية ذات علو. على العلم حيكت صورة جمجمة وعظمتين متقاطعتين.
بعد التحديق بالسفينة، فوجئ بعقرب أسود متوسّط الحجم يزحف على رمال الشاطئ. ظل معتز في مكانه ثابتاً حتى ابتعد العقرب، وقد استغرب وجوده في تلك المنطقة البحرية.
اقترب العقرب أسود اللون من أجساد المغمى عليهم حتى بدأ معتز بالشعور بالقلق على صحبه، فأطلق صيحة كبرى ليوقظهم.
