يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن تاريخ مصر الحديث، وذلك في فترة القرن التاسع عشر، حيث يذكر الأسباب التي جعلت نابليون بونابرت يفكر بشنّ حملته الاستعمارية على مصر، موضحاً أسبابها الدولية والسياسية، والدور الذي قام فيه المماليك، وما تبع هذا الدور من تأثيرٍ على تاريخ دول الشرق الإسلامي، وعن محاولات الباب العالي القضاء على المماليك، والأوبئة التي أصابت أهل مصر في عهد المماليك، كما تحدث عن المماليك وأموالهم وشغفهم بجمع الثروات، كما تحدث عن رجلين من المماليك كانت الأمور كلها في يدهم قبل قدوم الحملة الفرنسية، وهما مراد وإبراهيم، وقد وضح الكاتب الملامح العامة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية التي كانت سائدةً في مصر قبل قدوم الحملة الاستعمارية، كما أشار الكاتب إلى استعمار الهند من قبل إنجلترا، ومدى تأثير هذا الاستعمار على الوضع الاقتصادي لمصر وعلى ثروتها، وتحدث الكاتب أيضاً عن الفتح العثماني لمصر.
