تدور أحداث هذه الرواية حول بطلة الرواية الملكة المصرية الشهيرة "كليوباترا"، وهي كيلوباترا السابعة، ويُعرف عنها تعدد علاقاتها مع كثيرٍ من الشخصيات مثل "يوليوس قيصر"، و"بطليموس الخامس عشر" والمعروف باسم قيصرون، وابنه "ماركوس أنطونيوس"، حيث تدور أحداث هذه الرواية في أواخر حكم الملكة كليوباترا، أ يف عام 30 قبل الميلاد تقريباً، حيث حدثت واقعة اسمها واقِعة "أكتيوم"، اشتبك فيها كل من “أنطونيوس” و”أكتافيوس”، وذلك قرب الإسكندرية، حيث وقفت الملكة كليوباترا إلى جانب أنطونيوس، ومن ثم انسحبت في منتصف المعركة والقتال محتدم بين الطرفين، فأصبح جانبه ضعيفاً، ونال أوكتافيوس النصر، فقامت بإرسال شخصٍ يخبر أنطونيوس بأنها ماتت، فوضع سيفه في قلبه، وبعد أن علم أن الخبر مجرد كذبة، أمر بنقله بين يديها ليموت بقربها، فخافت كليوباترا على نفسها من الوقوع في أسر أكتافيوس، فماتت منتحرةً، تاركةً خلفها ولداً أنجبته من يوليوس قيصر، وبنتين من أنطونيوس، واللافت للنظر أن أحمد شوقي مؤلف هذه المسرحية، أراد أن يحقق الانتصار لكليوباترا، وأن يضعها في إطار الملكة المخلصة الوطنية التي تحرص على مصلحة وطنها وشعبها، والتي ظلمتها أقلام المؤرخين الغربيين حين وصفوها بأنها كانت ملكةً غانيةً لاهيةً لا تَهتم لمصلحة وطنها.
