إلياس الأيوبي: ولد في عكا سنة ١٨٧٤م، وتعلم فيها، ثم انتقل إلى مصر ليأخذ عن المدارس الفرنسية والإيطالية الموجودة بها آنذاك، اشتغل الأيوبي مدة بالتدريس، وما لبث أثناءها أن انكب على دراسة التاريخ فبرز في هذا المجال، وقد ألَّف الأيوبي عدة مؤلفات تاريخية منها: كتاب «تاريخ مصر في عهد الخديوي إسماعيل باشا من سنة ١٨٦٣م إلى ١٨٧٩م»، وطبع بدار الكتب المصرية سنة ١٩٣٢م، في مجلدين كبيرين، وكتاب «قطف الأزهار في أهم حوادث الأمصار»، طُبع منه الجزء الأول بالإسكندرية، وتوفي إلياس الأيوبي بمصر سنة ١٩٢٧م.

يتحدّث الكاتب والمفكّر إلياس الأيوبي هنا عن واحدة من اهم شخصيات التاريخ المصري وهو محمد علي باشا.
يعد محمد علي باشا "مؤسس الدولة المصرية الحديثة" _وهي مقولة كان هو نفسه أول من روج لها واستمرت بعده بشكل منظم وملفت_، وأحد أبرز حكامها التاريخيين، وهو الملقب بالعزيز أو عزيز مصر.
استطاع أن يعتلي عرش مصر عام 1805 بعد أن بايعه أعيان البلاد ليكون واليًا عليها، بعد أن ثار الشعب على سلفه خورشيد باشا، ومكّنه ذكاؤه واستغلاله للظروف المحيطة به من أن يستمر في حكم مصر لكل تلك الفترة..
يتطرّق الكتاب إلى فترة حكم محمد علي والتي استطاع فيها رغم عدم حصوله على شهادات أكاديمية، ورغم كونه رجلًا غير عسكري أن يؤسس لمشروع نهضة شامل في كافة المجالات السياسية والاقتصادية والعسكرية والتعليمية، كما استطاع أن يتخلص من أعدائه السياسيين الممثَّلين في طبقة البكوات المماليك، وعَمَّق من مركزية الحكم، ونهض باقتصاد الدولة الزراعي، وأدخل النظم الإدارية والمالية الحديثة لمؤسسات الدولة، وقام بتحديث الجيش المصري، وأرسل البعثات العلمية إلى أوروبا.
