يجسد "السكاكيني" في هذا العمل الزاخر بالمفردات العميقة فاجعته بموت زوجته والتي يصفها بسلطانة النساء ويصف على إثر ذلك شدة وطأة هذا المنعطف الذي لم يكن قادرًا على أن يستوعبه أو يتحمله أو يتقبله، فراح يلوم القدر مسترجعًا آخر كلمة للمسيح عندما عاتب الرب فيها قائلًا: "لِمَ تركتني؟". عمل تغلب عليه سمة الجنون ومرارة الشوق والوَلَع.
تُظهر الأبيات الشعرية في هذا العمل ثِقَل موتها على قلبه وما ارتد على أثره من حالات سوداوية وجد السكاكيني نفسه فيها من غير حول له ولا قوة.
أما النثر فيشرح بالتفصيل ما أَلَمَّ بها من مرض المتمثل في ورم وأعراضه وما كان يشعر به في كل مرة يراها على فراش المرض تتأوه ساخطًا على القدر تارة ومتخاصمًا مع حظه تارةً أخرى. في ثنايا الوصف لهذه الأحداث يُبرز السكاكيني بأناقة أسلوبه مناقب زوجته وخصالها الحميدة حتى في ذروة اشتداد المرض عليها، وقد وصل الحال به لأن يتغزّل بحسنها عند رؤيته لها تنام نومتها الأبدية.
يعبر عن كامل رفضه لموتها ويناجيها مؤكدًا لها أنه لا ينساها متمنيًا رجوعها، مؤكدًا لنفسه أنها تخاطب من هي بضيافتهم مِن مَن سبقوها للبارئ بأنها تشتاق له وتود الرجوع.
