موضوع هذا الكتاب هو تخريج الرجل المثقف، فهو يبحث الثقافة ماهية وغاية، وقيمة كما يبحث الوسائل، لتحقيقها وقد كان من حظي أن أكسب كلمة الثقافة معناها، العصري كما أني صرفت شطرًا كبيرًا من حياتي الوجدانية في التوجيه الثقافي لشبابنا بمؤلفات مختلفة قامت فيها المبادئ العصرية مقام المبادئ، التقليدية وكانت مشكلات الثقافة عندي بمثابة المشكلات السياسية أو الدينية عند، غيري بل كثيرًا ما كانت هذه المشكلات، شخصية أواجه فيها تربيتي الخاصة ونموي.الذهني ونحن في مصر نعيش في بؤس ثقافي أو فاقة فكرية تقارب، العُدم وليس فينا من يجهل، الأسباب بل السبب الوحيد في؛ ذلك إذ قد حال الاستعمار بيننا وبين التعليم العصري حتى إنه لم تؤسس وزارة المعارف مدرسة ثانوية للبنات إلا في سنة ١٩٢٥، وحتى إن جامعة القاهرة بقيت طريدة لا تعترف بها الحكومة أكثر من عشرين، سنة بل حَسْبُ القارئ أن يذكر القيود التي كانت تفرض على الراغبين في إصدار، المجلات وهناك قيود أخرى عديدة لا يمكن أن تُفَسَّرَ إلا بأنه كانت هناك رغبة مثابرة في إنكار حقنا في التطور الثقافي.
