هي أول روايات سلسلة جُرجي زيدان "روايات تاريخ الإسلام" ويسرد الكاتب أحوال العرب منذ ظهور الإسلام علي يد النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، مروراً بفتح مكة، وحتى عهد أمير المؤمنين عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه، وما تم في عهده من اتساع لرقعة الحكم الإسلامي شمل العراق وفارس والشام من خلال قصة الأمير حماّد وبنت الملك جبله هند وحبهما الذي عاش في زمن ملئ بالحروب والفتوحات.
وكان من بين المناطق التي شملها الفتح فلسطين والقدس، حيث طردت الجيوش الإسلامية القوات الرومانية ولم تعد القدس خاضعة للحكم الروماني، وقد اهتم عمر بهذا الفتح أشدَّ الاهتمام حتى أنه رحل من الحجاز إلى القدس بنفسه ليتوِّج هذا النصر.
ويتخلل الرواية وصف لعادات وتقاليد اجتماعية وأخلاقية عاشتها العرب في تلك الفترة من الزمان.
أمّا عن معمار الروايات فهو معمار كلاسيكي قائم على البناء المتنامي الصاعد الجدلي والخط المتوتر الذي ينطلق من الحاضر إلى المستقبل من خلال خاصية التوازن واللاتوازن أو خاصية التناوب أو التعاقب بين الخط السردي التاريخي والخط السردي القصصي
