فسّرت الاكتشافات العلمية الكثير من الظواهر الطبيعية، ما جعل النّاس يثقون بالعلم، وجعلهم أكثر قلقًا تجاه قضايا الوجود والعقائد الدينية.
وفي هذا الكتاب يتتبّع العقّاد النظريات والقوانين العلمية، ويرى أنّ تلك النظريات والأفكار الفلسفية كانت سببًا في إلحاد الكثيرين، إذ إنّ البعض اعتنقها وجعلها بديلًا عن الدّين.
والعقّاد هو عباس محمود العقاد؛ أديب، وشاعر، ومؤرّخ ، وفيلسوف مصريّ، كرّسَ حياته للأدب، كما أنّه صحفيٌّ له العديد من المقالات، وقد لمع نجمه في الأدب العربيّ الحديث، وبلغ مرتبةً رفيعة.
ولد العقاد في محافظة أسوان سنة 1889، في أسرةٍ بسيطة الحال، فاكتفى بالتّعليم الابتدائيّ، ولكنّه لم يتوقّف عن سعيه الذّاتيّ للعلم والمعرفة، فقرأ الكثير من الكتب.
وقد ألّف ما يزيد على مئة كتاب، وتُعدّ كتب العبقريّات من أشهر مؤلّفاته.
توفّي سنة 1964، تاركًا خلفه ميراثًا أدبيًّا زاخرًا.
