بيار كورناي: (١٦٠٦م–١٦٨٤م) يعتبر من أعظم المسرحيين الكلاسيكيين الغربيين، وكانت كتاباته تركز على الصراع بين الحب والشرف، ومن أشهر ما كتب مسرحية «السيد».

« حلم أغسطس» رواية مسرحيّة كلاسيكيّة تقع أحداثها في روما، للكاتب بيار كورناي، نجحت هذه المسرحيّة نجاحًا يناهض سابقتَيها: السيّد وهوراس، فمُثّلت مائة وست وستّين مرّة.
تصوّر الأخلاقَ والطباع تصويرًا دقيقًا يُبرز المزايا الخُلقيّة والخفايا النفسيّة، كما تحمل نقاشًا سياسيًا حذقه الكاتب وأبدع فيه، كما زخر أسلوب تعبيره بالقوّة والجاذبيّة، ويتجلّى ذلك في سرد الحوادث، أو في الحوار، أو عتاب الامبراطور، أو في رد فعل الندامة في نفس سنَّا.
تمتلك إميلي حبيبة سنَّا إرادةً قويّة، إلى جانب العجرفة وصلابة العود ، ويمثّل أغسطس، وهو بطل المسرحيّة، الحاكم الذي ينشد الكمال، سيّد نفسه، يكبت عواطفه في سبيل الحق، ويقدّس الواجب. وهذا ما نلمسه في عفوه عن سنَّا، ورغبته في التخلّي عن السلطة، وندمه على قسوته السابقة، مما جعله أنبل وجه، ليس في مسرحيّات كورناي فحسب، بل في مختلف مسارح التاريخ.
سنَّا، وهو شخصيّة ثانويّة، نقم على سيّده، المحسن إليه، استرسالًا منه في حب إميلي، فأقسم لها بقتل الامبراطور انتقامًا لأبيها، فأصبح أسيرَ قسمه.
