منذ نشأتها تثير الماسونية جدلاً واسعاً ونقاشات عنيفة ومحاولات متعددة لتوضيح تاريخها وأهدافها ، حتّى أصبح الجميع الآن يبجث فى تاريخها عمّا يدعم تفسيره لها ، فتارةً يُقال أن منابعها بين اليهودية والمسيحية ، وتارة يقال أنها ملحدة ، لكن المؤكد أنها منظمة سرية تماماً ، نشأت فى ظل ظروف اضطهادية تماماً فرضت عليها مزيد من العزلة والوحدة.
فى هذا الكتاب "تاريخ الماسونية العام" يتخد "جُرجى زيدان" من نفسه مدافعاً عن الماسونية ، ويرجع تاريخها فى إلى ظروف نشأتها فى كل بلد على حدة ، كما يؤكد فى كتابه أنَّ الماسونية ليست ضد الدين أو بديلاً عنها ، وليست مجالاً للملحدين .

"للمؤرخين في منشأ هذه الجمعية أقوال متضاربة؛ فمن قائل بحداثتها فهي على قوله لم تدرك ما وراء القرن الثامن عشر بعد الميلاد، ومنهم من سار بها الى ما وراء ذلك فقال إنها نشأت من جمعية الصليب الوردي التي تأسست سنة 1616 ب.م. ومنهم من أوصلها الى الحروب الصليبية، وآخرون تتبعوها الى أيام اليونان في الجيل الثامن قبل الميلاد. ومنهم من قال: إنها نشأت في هيكل سليمان ،وفئة تقول: إن منشأ هذه الجمعية أقدم من ذلك كثيراً، فأوصلوها الى الكهانة المصرية والهندية وغيرها.
وبالغ آخرون في أن مؤسسها آدم، والأبلغ من ذلك قول بعضهم إن الله سبحانه وتعالى أسسها في جنة عدن، وإن الجنة كانت أول محفل ماسوني وميخائيل، رئيس الملائكة، كان أول أستاذ أعظم فيه، الى غير ذلك من الأقوال المبنية على الوهم"
