تدور أحداث مسرحية "أميرة الأندلس" في زمنٍ أُعلن فيه سقوط الدولة الأموية في الأندلس، أي في زمن ملوك الطوائف في الأندلس، وذلك في عام 422 هجرية، فأصاب الدولة تشتت وتفتت، مما دعا كل أميرٍ من أمرائها القيام ببناء دويلات منفصلة وصغيرة، والبدء بتأسيس أسرةٍ حاكمةٍ خاصةٍ فيه، تتكون من أهله المقربين، وحين كتب أحمد شوقي هذه المسرحية، جعل مسرح الأحداث في نهايات القرن الخامس عشر من الهجرة، أي أنه اختار الوقت الذي انتهى فيه زمن ملوك الطوائف، وقد احتدم الصراع في المسرحية بين أطرافٍ عديدة، بينهم ألفونس ملك الفرنجة، ويوسف بن تاشفين ملك المرابطين في المغرب، وأخيه المعتمد بن عبّاد، حيث اختار أحمد شوقي المعتمد بن عباد وبثينة بنت المعتمد ليكونا البطلين في هذه الرواية، ويتضح في هذه الرواية الحال الذي وصل إليه ملوك ذلك الزمان، وكيف أنهم كانوا يعيشون حياةً ملؤها الترف والبذخ، وكيف أن الفساد انتشر في أوصال مملكتهم، وكيف ان الدسائس والمكائد انتشرت بينهم، فكان منهم المرتشي والراشي، والمخلوع والمقتول، مما أثر في حياة الرعية تأثيراً سلبياً.
