بحث الكتاب في أسباب تكوين العقليّة العربيّة، وتعرّض إلى أطوار الأدب العربي منذ العصر الجاهلي، متناولًا الشعراء الأوائل وأصحاب المعلّقات السبع، ثمّ انتقل إلى عصر صدر الإسلام، حيث سلّط الضوء على الأدب والشعر والرّواية والخطابة والنثر والخط، وتطرّق إلى العصر الأموي، ثمّ تناول العصور العباسيّة وتطوّر مسيرة الأدب فيها، متحدّثًا عن دخول المغول وسقوط الدولة العباسيَّة، وتدنّي حالة الأدب في تلك المرحلة، التي أطلق عليها عصرَ الانحطاط.
تناول الكتاب عصر النّهضة والأدب العربي إبّان القرن العشرين، مستكملًا رحلةَ الأدب التاريخيَّة، وقد تعرّض إلى روَّاد النهضة الأدبيَّة الحديثة أمثال أمين الريحاني، وإبراهيم اليازجي، وإبراهيم الأحدب.
