يُعتبرُ كتاب الكافي في اللّغة من المصنّفات التي عُنِيَتْ باللّغة العربية في بداية القرن العشرين، ولم يصل إلينا كاملًا إذ فُقِدَ معظمه، ولم يصلنا منه إلّا خطبة الكافي وشرحها الّذي تناول فيه الكاتب "طاهر الجزائري" نشأة اللّغة وأصولها وقواعد الصّرف مثل الاشتقاق وما يتّصل بها من دلالات ومعانٍ.
وقد استعان في شروحاته بآياتِ القرآن الكريم وكتب الحديث، وكان حريصاً على الاستشهاد بأمثلةٍ تُساعد على ترسيخ القواعد في ذهن القارئ، وقد تجنّبَ غريب اللّغة، وفرّقَ بين الفصيح والأفصح، وأجمَلَ قواعد الصّرف في آخر الكتاب في ثلاث قواعد رئيسة يسهلُ فهمها وتطبيقها.
كما قارن بين طرق تبويب المعاجم المختلفة بأسلوبٍ تفصيليّ يجعله مدخلاً تمهيديّاً لأهمّ الكتب اللّغوية.
أمّا "طاهر الجزائري" فهو الشيخ طاهر بن صالح بن أحمد بن موهوب السمعوني الجزائري، يحمل الجنسيّة السوريّة، وهو أديبٌ وتربويٌّ من كبارِ علماء اللّغة.
عمل في مجال التعليم، فكان معلّماً له أثرٌ كبير في تأسيس المدارس ومكافحة الأميّة، وله مؤلّفات عديدة منها :
الجواهر الكلاميّة في العقائد الإسلاميّة.
بديع التّلخيص.
توجيه النظر إلى أصول الأثر.
والكافي في اللّغة.
وقد توفي في الخامس من كانون الثّاني،1920، ودفن في سفح جبل قاسيون تنفيذاً لوصيّته.
