كتاب للأديب والمفكّر التاريخي القائم بين رجال العلم ورجال الدين؛ حيث يرجع الخلاف التقليدي بين هذين الفريقين إلى منطلقات منهج النظر؛ فالفريق الأول ينطلق من أسس تجريبية حسيّة، بينما الفريق الثاني ينطلق من أسس ميتافيزيقية غيبية، ويحاول هيكل من خلال هذا العمل تجاوز التعارض القائم بين الفريقين؛ فالدين والعلم متكاملان، فعلى الرغم من أن العلم يوسع من رقعة المعلوم إلا أنه يزيد في المقابل من رقعة المجهول أضعافًا مضاعفة، لذلك يبقى العلم قاصرًا عن الوصول للرؤية الكلية والنهائية التي يمدنا بها الدين.
يدلّنا استقراء التاريخ على أنّ الصِّراع بين الدين والعلم كان رهيبا حقا ،خاصةً في أوربا إبّان عصر النهضة ،ويُرجع الخلاف التقليدي بين رجال الدين ورجال العلم آن ذاك إلى اعتراف رجال الدين بالغيبيات وتأثيرها فى حياة الناس وإنكار العلم لها وإقراره لما هو ثابت من قوانين الوجود على نحو حسيّ.
ولقد لفتت آراء الفيلسوف "كونت" النظر إلى أنَّ الإيمان الموروث يجب أن يحلَّ محله إيمانٌ أساسه المعرفة كأوسع ما يمكن أن تكون، وهذا ما يعرضه هيكل فى فصول كتابه الذى انتهى فيه إلى ضرورة التوفيق بين جانبى الحياة : " الروحي" و" المادي" لبلوغ التوازن العقلي ، وأنَّ الدين والعلم لم تكن بينهما خصومة ولن تكون بينهما خصومة.
الكتاب عبارة عن تجميع لعدة مقالات صحفية متتالية في فصول؛ الفصل الأول و الثالث يتحدث عن علاقة الإيمان بالعلم و الثاني عن فكر أوجست كونت و الأخير يتحدث عن مشكلة الأنسان هل هو مخيّر أم مُسيّر.
