تدور أحداث هذه المسرحية في عصر ملوك الطوائف في الأندلس (٤٢٢هـ)، وهو ذلك العصر الذي أعلن فيه الوزير أبو الحزم بن جهور سقوط الدولة الأموية في الأندلس، مما فتت الدولة، ودفع بكل أمير من أمرائها ببناء دويلة منفصلة، وتأسيس أسرة حاكمة من أهله وذويه. وقد اختار أحمد شوقي الفترة التي انتهى فيها عصر ملوك الطوائف في أواخر القرن الخامس الهجري لتكون مسرحًا للأحداث، حيث تجسد الصراع فيها بين عدة أطراف كان منهم، المعتمد بن عباد، وأخيه يوسف بن تاشفين ملك المرابطين في المغرب، وألفونس ملك الفرنجة. وقد اختار شوقي كل من المعتمد بن عباد وأميرة الأندلس بثينة بنت المعتمد بطلين لهذه الرواية. وتبين الرواية المسرحية حال ملوك ذلك الزمان، وكيف عاشوا في بذخ وترف، وكيف استشرى الفساد في ملكهم، وكثرت المكائد والدسائس فيما بينهم، فكان منهم المقتول والمخلوع، والراشي والمرتشي، فتأمل كيف كان حال الرعية في ذلك الزمان!
