كان الأستاذ الشيخ محمد عبد العليم يلقي على تلاميذ الفصل الأول من السنة الأولى بالمدرسة الخديوية في الساعة الثالثة بعد الظهر درسًا في «المبتدأ والخبر»، وكانت التلاميذ مصغية إليه إصغاء الطفل لنصائح أبيه؛ لا حبًّا في الأستاذ ولكن خوفًا من شدته؛ إذ كان معروفًا بينهم ببأسه وغلظ كبده، حتى لقبه أشقياؤهم بالصاعقة، فكان إذا لاح شبحه من بعيد وهم يلعبون ويمرحون في فناء المدرسة، صاح أحدهم قائلًا: «هلم بنا نغادر هذا المكان قبل أن تحل به الصاعقة.» وتعقب هذه الصيحة ضحكات متواليات تدل على بغضهم للأستاذ ونفورهم منه، وما كان الأستاذ بالرجل ذي القلب الأسود كما يزعمون، ولكنه كان ممن يتفانون في حب النظام ومراعاة الآداب، وكم من مرة رأف بتلاميذه وأشفق عليهم وساعدهم إذا خانهم الحظ في الامتحان.
