سورة الأفعى تحكي في التاريخ من خلال أبطال عاشوا في ذلك الوقت، ولا تفسر التاريخ، لأنها تهتم أكثر بالنفس البشرية ونقائضها وبحثها الدؤوب عن المدينة الفاضلة.
من أجواء الرواية: كاتى تعرف الظمأ والظلام، تجلس فى المخبأ، وتسمع صوت سارينة الإنذار. تقول لها أمها "لا تبكى. لا يبكى أحفاد ألكسندر". فتهمس "لكن.." انقطعت سلالة ألكسندر حين مات فى سن الثلاثين. مات دون ولد. وقعت الإمبراطورية العظيمة. من يرث ألكسندر؟ لا أحد أو كل أحد. كل القتلة والمهرجين يطمعون فى الإرث "هتلر"، "موسولينى"، "ستالين"، "تشرشل"، "روزفلت"، "توجو"، كل هؤلاء يريدون جسد ألكسندر. مهرجون يحكمون العالم. مهرجون لهم أنوف حمراء وشعر أخضر منكوش. – أخبار اليوم.
