يبدأ الكاتب روايته - الأعلى مبيعًا في إيران- من لحظة الذروة وهي عودة بطله إلى مسرح الجريمة التي اقترفها إذ ضرب أحدهم بالمعول فأجهز عليه،لكنّه يحار إن كان قد ارتكب الجريمة واقعيا أم في تخيلاته فقط!! لتكون تلك شرارة الدخول في عالم التناقضات المتصارعة بالنسبة ل"غابيك" الذي يسأل نفسه عن أسباب عودته إلى تلك البناية "لماذا الآن؟ بالضبط بعد شهر ويومين من ليلة الحادثة؟ لماذا لم آتِ تلك الليلة ذاتها؟ كان يمكن إخبار الشرطة على الأقل" ويظل الراوي غريبًا في حله وترحاله فيصف نفسه بقوله أنّه عاش كل عمره في النصف الشرقي بتوقيت النصف الغربي للكرة الأرضية.. وأنه في البناية التي يسكن فيها في باريس عندما يحل الليل يُصبح الطابق السادس كوكبًا صغيرا بالنسبة له ويصير هو قبطانه الوحيد ولم يكن هناك من يعترض على هذا الأمر...فما هو السرّ الذي يخفيه غابيك حتى عن نفسه وما حقيقة ذلك المبنى الباريسي الذي يستأجره إيرانيون منفيين وبعض الباريسيين من صاحبه العجوز الشيوعي؟
