من يطالع رواية المقامر لـ"دوستويفسكي" يلاحظ أنها تحمل إلى حدّ ما بصمات السيرة الذاتية، ولا نقصد بذلك أن الكاتب صوّر في الرواية مشاهد من حياته الخاصة، ولا نقصد أن بعض ظروف هذه الحياة قد انعكس في الرواية. لقد كان دوستويفسكي شخصاً مشبوب العواطف وكانت المقامرة في الروليت من أكثر ما ولع به ولفترة طويلة. كان يعرف أدق خفايا هذه اللعبة لا من الناحية التقنية وحدها، بل خبر بنفسه صعود الخط وأفوله، وتصاريف القدر، وتعاقب الأمل واليأس. كان أحياناً يربح مبالغ ضخمة ولكنه في حمية المقامرة يخسرها إلى آخر درهم، حتى لا يبقى معه ما يسدد به حساب الشاي والشموع في الفندق.
بالطبع ليس هناك وجه شبه كبير بين "اليكس إيفانوفتش"، الشاب ذي الخمسة والعشرين عاماً والذي يجري السرد على لسانه وبين مؤلف الرواية. غير أن هذا الشاب يحظى دوماً بعطف الكاتب. فهو شاب صلب، قوي الملاحظة، ساخر، وهو مشبع بمشاعر الاعتزاز بالنفس والكرامة، وهو أخيراً على أعلى درجات الشرف والاستقامة. ومع ذلك كله فهو شخص مقامر. ولكن مقامرته تختلف تماماً عن ذلك الدافع الذي يحرك معظم رواد رولتنبرج. وبالطبع هو يسعى إلى الفوز.
لكنه بحاجة إلى النقود لا لحل مشاكله الخاصة أساساً بل لحل مشاكل الأخرين وإذا كان المال بالنسبة لمدموازيل بلانش "ودي جريو" وغيرهما من الآثمين هو الهدف الوحيد المنشود، وغاية ما يصبو من إليه في الحياة، فإنه بالنسبة "لإليكس أيفا نوفتش" مجرد وسيلة لبلوغ أغلى شيء يطمح إليه، أي الحرية.
ومن يقرأ الصفحات المخصصة لوصف "الجولات الخاطفة للشخصية النسائية الأولى التي ابتدعها دوستويفسكي والتي هي "انطوانيجا فاسيليفيا". يجد أنها قد كتبت بروعة فائقة، وقد أصبحت هذه المرأة الفريدية في أصالتها من أنجح الشخصيات النسائية التي ابتدعها الكاتب.
أما الشخصية النسائية الثانية "لولينا ألكسندر" وقنا- فهي بالنسبة لدوستويفسكي إلى حد ما شخصية فاصلة. فيها تبدأ سلسلة من الشخصيات "الانعزالية"، ذوات الطبيعة القوية، الشهوانية، الغريزة النفس والأبية.
