تخيل نفسك في تجمع اجتماعي مع أشخاص قابلتهم مؤخرًا وتستمتع بصحبتهم. فيكون الحديث مفعمًا بالحيوية، ويبدو أن الجميع يحظون بوقت طيب. وحينما يلقي أحد الضيوف بتعقيب يذكِّرك بقصة طريفة سمعتها ذات مرة، فإنك تستغل هذا الانفتاح الطبيعي وتبدأ في حكايتها، ولأنك تتذكر كم ضحكت عند سماعك القصة للمرة الأولى، فإنك تتطلع لمشاركة متعتك مع هؤلاء الأصدقاء الجدد.
وهكذا، تسترق النظر إلى وجوهم تباعا، متوقعًا منهم أن يضحكوا إلى أن تصل إلى خاتمة قصتك.
لكن لا شيء سوى الصمت.
بعد لحظات يقول أحدهم: "أوه، لقد فهمت – هذا مضحك". وبرغم ذلك لا أحد يضحك.
وفجأة يحمر وجهك خجلا وتشعر بسخونته، وتهبط بنظرك للأسفل، وتتجنب عقد اتصال بصري مع أي من الضيوف الآخرين. تشعر لوهلة بأنك مرتبك، وأفكارك مشوشة وغير منظمة، وتتمنى لو أنك لم تحك هذه القصة مطلقًا، وأن تتوارى عن الأنظار بأي طريقة. وحينما يغير ضيف آخر الموضوع ويمضي الحديث قدما، تشعر بالراحة لتحول انتباه المجموعة عنك، وسرعان ما تستعيد حالتك الطبيعية. كل هذا ولم يمض أكثر من سبع أو ثماني ثوانٍ منذ إنهائك حكي قصتك.
ما اسم الشعور الذي انتابك حينما لا تُحدث قصتك الأثر المطلوب؟
إذا أخبرتك بأنك شعرت بشيء من الخزي، فستعترض على الأرجح بقولك: "هذا ليس خزيا، بل شعور بالحرج". يستجيب الناس بهذه الطريقة حينما أستخدم كلمة الخزي لوصف تجربة كهذه، وقد يصرون على عدم وجود سبب يدعو للشعور بالخزي بشأن أمر تافه كهذا، فكل شخص يلقي نكتة بين الحين والآخر لا تثير ضحك المستمعين. هذا أمر محرج بالطبع، لكن لا شيء يدعو للشعور بالخزي.
