في عدد شهر شباط لسنة 2013 ، للدورية البريطانية المعنونة «الشؤون الآسيوية »، التي تصدرها الجمعية الآسيوية في لندن، نشرت مقالة باللغة الإنكليزية بعنوان «صور الهاشميين ». وضعت تلك المقالة في سياق رسالة الى المحرر بعثها الى الجمعية المذكورة، المقدم المتقاعد في الجيش الأمريكي «ويليم لَيير ». وزينت المقالة بمجموعة من الصور الفوتوغرافية التاريخية الرائعة من أرشيف العائلة المالكة في العراق، منها ما لم ينشر من قبل. وذكر الكاتب ويليم لَيير في هذه الرسالة، قصة العثور على هذه المجموعة من الصور الفوتوغرافية في أطلال وخرائب قصر الزهور الملكي في ظل ظروف الحرب الجارية في العراق.
وكما يبدو كانت هذه المجموعة من الصور الفوتوغراقية والأعمال الفنية الأخرى مخبأة لسبب ما في مخازن سرية في قصر الزهور وظهرت بين الركام بعد تهديم المبنى، الذي كان بعهدة الجهات الأمنية العراقية في عهد النظام السابق، ونتيجة لقصف الطيران الأمريكي للدوائر الأمنية العراقية المنتشرة في مختلف مناطق بغداد. كان وقع الخبر مذهلاً بالعثور على هكذا كنز من الصور الفوتوغرافية العراقية التاريخية وكنت قد قضيت أكثر من ثلاثين عاماً في البحث والتقصي في تاريخ التصوير الفوتوغرافي في العراق.
