الخبر هو أساس الصحافة الحديثة وعمودها الفقري ، فبدونه لا يمكن أن تكون هناك صحافة أو صحيفة ، فالخبر يحتل الصدارة بين فنون التحرير الصحفي ، لأنه صانع كل هذه الفنون وواجدها والأب الروحي لها أي أنها كلها تالية لفن الخبر ، فلا يمكن للحديث أو التحقيق أو التقرير أو المقال أن يأتي إلا إذا أتى الخبر . إن الخبر هو الأصل في كل شيء" بالنسبة للصحيفة ، فبدون الخبر لا يتولد الرأي الذي تتضمنه الافتتاحيات والمقالات ، وبدون الخبر لا يمكن أن يولد التحقيق الصحفي أو التقرير الصحفي أو الحوار الصحفي .بمعنى أن الأخبار حاليا لم تعد أخبار مدينة لوحدها أو منطقة بذاتها ، بل أن الكون يتحرك بسرعة ، والعالم أصبح صغيرا ، إلى الحد الذي يجعل ما يحدث في أي منطقة من العالم يهم كثيرا من سكان المعمورة ، وما يقع في منطقة من المناطق قد يكون مقدمة لأحداث عالمية تقلب حياة سكان العالم ..فهذا الكون الذي كان كبيرا أو ضخما من عشرات السنين ، أصبح الآن صغيرا كما لو كان الحي الصغير الذي تسكنه .هذا بالنسبة للخبر الصحفي في الصحافة الورقية أما الخبر الصحفي في الصحافة الالكترونية لا يموت ولذلك تحتاج مقولة " كارل وارين " إلى إعادة صياغة في ظل وجود صحافة الكترونية تنشر الخبر لحظة بلحظة حتى أسرع من القنوات التليفزيونية التي تبث برامجها في أوقات ثابتة . وإذا كانت الجدة من أهم الصفات اللازم توافرها في الخبر بشكل عام ، فلقد اكتسبت هذه الصفة أهمية مضاعفة في الصحافة الالكترونية التي تتسابق على كثرتها وتباين إمكاناتها في توصيل الخبر للمتلقي . وعامل السرعة مهم جدا بالنسبة للجمهور ، حيث أن الجمهور بغريزته يقدر الأنباء الطازجة وذلك لأن الحس الإنساني لا يتجه إلا في مجال البحث عن الجديد ، ولذا يكثر استخدام الجمهور للصحف الالكترونية خاصة في هذا العصر الذي يتسم بالتضخم المعرفي والمعلوماتي الهائل . ولكن لابد أن ننوه أن هناك بعض الأخبار التي حدثت في الماضي طرأ عليها تطورات معينة تعطي لهذا الخبر أهمية مثل الخبر الحديث.
