على الرغم من أن إستراتيجيات التدريس في غرفة الصف يجب أن تُبنى بوضوح على البحوث والعلوم المناسبة، فإن معرفة متى تُستخدم ومع من، هو في حقيقة الأمر فن في حدّ ذاته. ويعرض كتاب (التدريس علم وفن) الذي ألفه روبرت مارزانو نموذجًا لضمان جودة التدريس التي توازن بين الحاجة إلى بيانات مبنية على البحث والحاجة التي لا تقل عنها أهمية، وهي فهم مواطن القوة والضعف لدى كل طالب. وقد عرض المؤلف إطار عمله في صورة أسئلة عشرة تمثل تسلسل تخطيط منطقي لأي خطة تدريسية ناجحة: ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل لوضع أهداف التعلم ونشرها وتتبع تقدم الطلاب، والاحتفاء بالنجاح؟ ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل لمساعدة الطلاب على التفاعل مع المعرفة الجديدة على نحوٍ فاعل؟ ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل لمساعدة الطلاب على التدرب على المعرفة الجديدة وتعميق فهمهم لها؟ ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل لمساعدة الطلاب على وضع فرضيات عن المعرفة الجديدة واختبارها؟ ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل لإبقاء الطلاب منهمكين في العمل؟ ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل لوضع القواعد والإجراءات الصفية والمحافظة عليها؟ ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل للتحقق من الالتزام بالتعليمات والإجراءات الصفية أو عدم الالتزام بها؟ ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل لبناء علاقة فاعلة مع الطلاب والمحافظة عليها؟ ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل لوضع توقعات عالية للطلاب جميعًا؟ ماذا يتعين عليَّ أن أفعل لتطوير دروس فاعلة ومنظمة في وحدة متماسكة؟ وتحقيقًا لفاعلية الدروس، يتعين على المعلمين أن يتفحصوا كل مكوّن من مكوّنات عملية التدريس بالإصرار نفسه. إن هذا الدليل الغني بالجداول والمصفوفات والأشكال، سيساعد المعلمين على تفحص مهاراتهم ومعرفتهم وتطويرها؛ ليستطيعوا تحقيق انتشار الفن والعلم انتشارًا حيويًّا، وهذا يؤدي إلى استخدام طرق تدريس استثنائية، والارتقاء بتحصيل الطلاب.
