أحداث الرواية تقع في قرية "سيدي يامون" بالمغرب مسقط رأس الحسين الغزاوي بطل الرواية الإشكالي و الصادم، و يتعلق الأمر بفتى فقير بائس انتقل لمتابعة دراسته الإعدادية و الثانوية بحاضرة فاس في سبعينيات القرن الماضي و كله أمل في التغيير و الثورة و تجويد أوضاعه الاجتماعية، و تبلغ أحلامه ذراها في مرحلة الجامعة بالرباط العاصمة حيث يتغذى من الفكر اليساري لفهم مدركات عالمه، وتتدرّج الأحداث و تتشابك بطريقة سوداء ساخرة فيلقى عليه القبض بعد مدة من تعيينه أستاذا للتاريخ و يقضي رفقة زملائه الأتقياء سنوات من الاعتقال و التعذيب ،و تختتم الرواية أحداثها بلحظات النهاية في حياة الغزاوي . كما تنتقد الرواية وبشدة أمراضا اجتماعية خطيرة كالفساد الإداري و المحسوبية و الانتهازية و الظلم و الفقر و القهر.
