ولدت أبكار السقاف في مصر عام 1913 لأب من حضرموت، هو الشريف محمد سعيد السقاف، ولأم من أصل تركي، عزيزة، كان والدها تاجر تبغ. تلقت أبكار تعليمها في مدرسة الساكريه كور، أو القلب المقدس، بالقاهرة، واستفادت من مكتبة والدها العامرة بالكتب التراثية، وكذلك من أحاديثه مع زائريه من رجالات السياسة، حيث كان ضالعًا في الحركة السياسية في شبه الجزيرة العربية، يضاف إلى ذلك قراءات أبكار الواسعة في الفلسفة والآثار والأدب. ربطت أبكار السقاف أواصر صداقة مع أعلام عصرها من المفكرين والأدباء في القاهرة.
في بداية الستينيات من القرن العشرين بدأت أبكار السقاف في نشر أجزاء من مؤلفها الأساسي الضخم"" نحو آفاق أوسع"" وهو من الكتب العربية الرائدة في مجال دراسة الأديان المقارنة، والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا أحد أجزائه.
توفيت أبكار السقاف في نهاية العقد الثامن من القرن العشرين.
