كل موضوع في الفلسفة يطلق عليه لفظ ""مشكلة"" فهناك على سبيل المثال: مشكلة النفس، مشكلة الإنسان، مشكلة الطبيعة، مشكلة المعرفة... وكذلك مشكلة الله. نبع الدافع الأول لقيام جيمس دانيال كولينز أستاذ الفلسفة الراحل الشهير بجامعة سانت لويس بهذه الدراسة من ملاحظة الاتحاد الوثيق بين التاريخ الحديث لمشكلة ""الله"" وبين التأمل المعاصر له. وليست المسألة هي أن الفيلسوف اليقظ في يومنا هذا سيقطع أشواطًا أوسع في دراسته لله بالرجوع إلى تفكير أسلافه في هذا الموضوع، بل الأحرى أنه لن يتقدم خطوة دون ذلك الرجوع.
إن أول أغراض هذا الكتاب أن يحدد الأنماط الرئيسية للتناولات الفلسفية لمشكلة الله في المرحلة الحديثة، مع التأكيد على تلك الاتجاهات التاريخية التي ما زالت تعمل عملها في صياغة تصوراتنا المعاصرة عن الله.
يعتبر هذا الكتاب من أهم مؤلفات جيمس كولينز إلى جوار كتابيه ""الوجوديون"" و ""عقل كيركجورد"".
يعتبر المترجم الكبير الراحل فؤاد كامل من أهم مترجمي الدراسات الفلسفية الفارقة في مصر والعالم العربي، تخرج في قسم الفلسفة عام 1949 ومن ترجماته: الفرد في فلسفة شوبنهاور، فلاسفة وجوديون، الموسوعة الفلسفية المختصرة، الفلسفة الفرنسية من ديكارت إلى سارتر، وغيرهم من الترجمات الشهيرة.
