يعرض كتاب (الفلاكة والمفلوكون) أفكارًا في غاية الأهمية عن الفقر وأسبابه وتداعياته على الأفراد والمجتمعات، كما يناقش ظاهرة التلازم بين العلم والفقر، ويعد مُنْبِئًا عن العصر الذي عاش فيه كاتبه، وثورة اجتماعية ضد الظلم والقهر، وعزاء لهؤلاء المفلوكين المظلومين من الناس والحاكم، بل من أنفسهم أيضًا.
ولم يفت الإمام الدلجي في كتابه هذا الذي وضعه في القرن التاسع الهجري، أن ينظر إلى الفقراء بوصفهم طبقة يراد لها أن تؤمن بأقدار الله التي حكمت عليهم بالفقر، وأن يغضّوا الطرف عمّن يحتكر الثروة ليمعن في إفقارهم، ويقرن بين الغنى والتمدن، ويشدد على أن الاجتماع بين المفلوكين ومنهم أكثر فلاكة لا فائدة منه؛ لأن حكمة التمدّن مفقودة فيهما، وغاية الاجتماع بهما تضاعف الفلاكة وتكاثفها، خلافًا لاجتماع الأغنياء وتمدنهم.
هذا الكتاب من أهم الدراسات التي تمت عن الفقر، لتميزها بالعمق والتحقيق واستخدام منهج الملاحظة بالمشاركة في دراسته للفقراء والفقر باعتبار مؤلفه واحدًا من الفقراء الذين يتحدث ويكتب عنهم.
