بين عامي 2006 – 2016 تغيرت حياة خمسة أطفال بشكل مأساوي، فأحدهم أصيب بالشلل، وشقيق الآخر قتل، وصديقتهم الوحيدة أصبح والدها نزيل دار الرعاية العقلية بعد تعرضه لاعتداء دموي عليه، أضف إلى ذلك العثور على جثة فتاة مقطعة الأوصال ومفقودة الرأس!! هل لقدوم المدرس السيد هالوران علاقة في ما يحصل؟ أم لداء الزهايمر يد في الأمر؟ أحياناً، أخطاء بسيطة تقود إلى نتائج وخيمة. أخوان يموتان في المكان نفسه وبالطريقة نفسها بفارق ثلاثين سنة، وقاتل يخدع الجميع؛ حتى أنه يخدع نفسه فيقتل الضحية الخطأ. كل ذلك يجتمع في رواية "رجل الطبشور" لتولد حبكة مشوقة جداً لا تتكشف إلا في الصفحات وربما الأسطر الأخيرة. وستكون النهاية صادمة بكل ما للكلمة من معنى. من أجواء الرواية نقرأ: "... "في بعض الأحيان يا إيد... من الأفضل ألا تعرف جميع الأجوبة". غريبٌ كم تبدو حياتك صغيرة حين تتركها خلف ظهرك. بعد اثنين وأربعين عاماً، تخيلت أن مساحتي على الأرض ستكون أكبر، وأن ما غيرته في الزمن سيكون أكبر. ولكن لا، تماماً مثل كل البقية، معظم حياتي – الجزء المادي على الأقل منها – يمكن أن يتسع في شاحنة نقل كبيرة واحدة. شاهدت الأبواب تنغلق، وآخر ممتلكاتي المادية توضع في صندوق ويكتب عليه ما فيه ويوضع في الداخل. تقريباً آخرها. ابتسمت لرجال النقل آملاً أن تكون لفتة مرحة وودية. "انتهينا إذن؟". قال الرجل الأكبر سناً، الذي يبدو أكثر تعباً من بقية الفريق: "نعم انتهينا". (...). "سنحتاج إلى المال يا إيد. هيئ نفسك. بداية جديدة. كلنا نحتاج بدايات جديدة أحياناً".
