في بيت عمَه تربَى كنديد على يد مدرسَه بنغلوس. علَمه المدرس مذهب ليبنتز في الفلسفة الدينية والذي يقول بأن العالم كما هوعليه الآن هو أفضل ما يمكن. وأن على الإنسان أن يرضى فليس في الإمكان أبدع مما كان. عما قليل سيكتشف العم حب كنديد لابنته كونيغوند فيطرده لتكون أولى الصدمات يبدأ كنديد التساؤل حول فلسفة معلمه بينما يشهد زلزال اشبونة والدمار الذي خلفته على أوروبا حرب السنوات السبع. وينطلق في رحلة يجوب فيها الآفاق في محاولة للمَ شمله على حبيبته، وهو في ذلك يطالع اختلافات البشر ويجادل بسخرية تختلط بالفانتازيا ضد كل ما هو جمود ومع كل ما هو تحرر، قيل أن يصل في نهاية روايته إلى القول: "يجب أن نزرع حديقتنا".
كنديد رواية ضد الخمول والركون لليقين المزيف، ومع الطموح والشغف بالسؤال وبالتغيير، ورحلة كنديد هي انتصار للمغامرة الصعبة اللذيذة التي يسمونها "الحياة"، وهي اليوم صالحة للقراءة والتدبر كما كانت بالضبط- وربما أكثر- عندما نشرها فولتير سراً للمرة الأولى عام 1759.
