الصورة الذهنية الشائعة لدى الكثيرين من المسلمين هي أن الفن لا صلة له بالدين، فهما موضوعان مختلفان. غير أن هذا التصور يعبر عن فهم ضحل أو مغلوط لا يفطن إلى ما هنالك من صلة حميمة بين الفن والدين. فالفن والدين في الأصل مرتبطان ارتباطًا وثيقًا، فهما موضوعان ملتحمان في الوعي الإنساني منذ أن حاول الإنسان عبر التاريخ التعبير عن نفسه من خلال أنشطة قصدية لا تتوجه بفعل الغريزة فحسب: فالإنسان البدائي قد وعى المقدس باعتباره قوة هائلة غامضة تتحكم في حياته ومصيره، ولذلك يشعر إزاءها بمشاعر متباينة ومتداخلة من الرهبة والروعة والإجلال. كما أننا نشهد ذلك في فن المعمار عند القدماء وفي العصر الوسيط المسيحي والإسلامي. كما أن المساجد قد عبرت بأشكال مختلفة عن وعي المسلمين بوحدانية الإله التي تتجسد في المئذنة التي تشبه الواحد كعدد وهيئة، والتي تتجسد أيضًا في الإحساس باللانهائية الذي يتجلى في المنمنمات والأشكال الهندسية التي تتكرر إلى مالا نهاية. وهذا ما تشهد به أيضًا لوحات التصوير المسيحي في العصر الوسيط، التي تصور غالبًا الروح المسيحية التي تعبر عن نفسها في حالة من السكينة والطمأنينة، كما تتجلى في وجوه وإيماءات العائلة المقدسة والقديسين. فما الذي حدث ليفصم عُرى الصلة الحميمة بين الفن والدين، ويسـيء إلى الفن والدين معًا في واقعنا الثقافي؟ الواقع أن هذا الانفصام نشأ على مراحل، واتخذ أساليب متنوعة ومتباينة.. وذلك ما سيتبينه القارئ من خلال سطور هذا الكتاب المتميز.
