إن الوجوه التي نراها في هذا العمل الذي هو أوّل أعمال دوستويفسكي، سنقع عليها في أعماله الأخرى، إنها وجوه "الفقراء" وأشكال عيشهم، فنشاركهم عذابهم بقدر ما ندرك ما تختزنه تلك النفوس من قدرة على الحب والتضحية.
وفي هذه الرواية سنتلمَّس الأغوار العميقة التي سينفذ إليها دوستويفسكي، والأعماق الميتافيزيقية التي ستذهب إليها رواياته في الغوص عميقاً في أبعاد الشخصية الإنسانية، وخاصة في تصوير حياة الفقراء والمهمَّشين والدخول إلى عوالمهم النفسية التي ستدور حولها معظم رواياته.
فالبَطلان في هذه الرواية مضطهَدان معذَّبان مذَلّان مهانان، يوقع فيهما الأشرار كل أنواع الظلم، ويتحملان من الفقر ما لا يُطاق، فيتحمّل ماكار الذلّ والجوع ويضحّي بكل ما يمكنه الحصول عليه، وهو قليل جداً، في سبيل الفتاة المسكينة التي لا يكاد يراها، ولا يجرؤ أن يزورها مخافة النمائم، إنه يرتضي لنفسه الحرمان من أجل إسعادها فيرسل إليها هداياه الصغيرة متحمِّلاً البرد والجوع والإذلال.
عبر الفقر الذي يعانيه ماكر ديفوشكين يكشف دوستويفسكي عن كل الفقر الذي يحيط به، وحين يهمّ الرجل أن يشكو ويتذمر من العذاب الذي يقاسيه الخيرون في هذا العالم، نراه يعود ليتراجع عن الشكوى والتذمر، مسلّماً بالواقع، مذعناً لمشيئة القدر، همّه فقط أن يسعد غيره بسذاجة تحمل ببساطتها روحاً إنسانية مدهشة.
