رجل وامرأة من دولتين مختلفتين يتقابلان في متجر أنتيكان في كامبريدج: ""براني تاو""، ولاجئ سياسي كردي من تركيا، و""فيروز"" التي هاجرت إلى المملكة المتحدة هربًا من الثورة في إيران. ببطء يبدا حبهما في النمو. يساعد في نموه هذا قصص من تراثيهما، وحب مشترك للأدب، واعتراف مشترك بغربتهما في ذلك المكان الذي يعيشان فيه. يروي ""براني تاو"" قصصًا من تاريخ عائلته، حكايات حيَّة تعيد إليه ذكرى الأساطير القديمة: رعاة يضربهم البرق، جنود يعودون من الحرب محملين بكوابيسها الدموية. الانتقام الذي دمَّر عائلات، قرويون يبحثون عن أكوابٍ مسروقة، ومصورٌ يحمل الأخبار الي القرى عن طريق الصور التي يلتقطها. تلك الذكريات المظلمة التي ورثها من ثقافته، مختلطة بطبيعته الكئيبة، ومرض الأرض الذي يلا يشفى منه، كل هذا يشكل حملًا ثقيلًا على عاتقي ""براني تاو"" الذي يلجأ إلى المقابر ليتأمل ويخرج كل ما يعتمل بصدره بها. ولكن ومع دخول ""فيروز"" حياته، يبدأ في البحث عن مكان أكثر حرية بداخله. ""فيروز"" كذلك تخفي بداخلها أسرارًا عائلية حزينة، وعندما تعود فجأة إلى إيران لحادث عاجل، يعرف ""براني تاو"" ما عليه فعله.
