"اقتبست الكاتبتين عنوان هذا الكتاب ""حذارٍ من جوعي"" من قصيدة محمود درويش ""بطاقة هوية"". وينقسم الكتاب إلى جزأين: الجزء الأول تروي فيه الأديبة ""ميلينا آجوس"" المأساة التي حدثت في إيطاليا في عام 1946 في شكل روائي وبأسلوب أدبي، وفي الجزء الثاني تسرد الصحفية ""لوتشانا كاستيلّينا"" القصة بشكل وثائقي استنادًا للمصادر التاريخية الحقيقية.
وقد بدأت هذه المأساة أثناء الحرب العالمية الثانية وتحديدًا عندما قامت حرب مدينة ""بوليا"" بإيطاليا، في الوقت الذي كانت تعيش فيه إيطاليا أزمة اقتصادية كبرى وأزمة بطالة لدرجة تكاد تصل إلى المجاعة. لذا كانت تشهد البلاد حينئذ ثورات واحتجاجات كبرى من الفلاحين وعمال اليومية الذين لا يجدون قوت يومهم، وكذلك العائدون من الحرب الباحثون عن عمل. ففي يوم 7 مارس 1946 في مدينة ""أندريا""، عندما اجتمع حشد كبير من هؤلاء الفقراء في انتظار خطاب الزعيم ""چوزيبِّه دي ڨيتوريو""، أُطلق الرصاص من أحد أسطح قصور الأغنياء لإثارة الحشد. إلى أي مدى وصلت هذه المأساة؟ هل الأغنياء مذنبون حقًا فيما حدث أم ضحايا هذه المأساة الإيطالية؟ مَن المتهم في هذه القضية؟ بالتأكيد هناك متهم، ولكن التاريخ سيظل يتذكر هذه المأساة الإيطالية.
