تتحدث الرواية عن كاتبة تحاول أن تكتب قصتها للمرة الأولى ولكنها تكتشف أن حياتها عادية لا تستحق الكتابة وبينما هي تبحث عن قصة جديدة ترى فتاة وحيدة تجلس في أحد مقاعد الحديقة وتشعر أن عندها قصة حزينة تختبئ خلف عينيها الدامعتين عندها تذهب إليها محاولة التقرب منها والتعرف على قصتها فتتعرف عليها الفتاة وتبدي إعجابها بقصصها ورواياتها التي دائما تختتم بنهاية سعيدة وتطلب منها ان تكتب قصتها لتعطيها نهاية سعيدة ولو على الورق ثم تتداخل الأحداث بين لقاءاتها مع بطلة قصتها وحياتها التي تكتشف فيها جوانب خفية عنها لم تكن تعلم عنها قبلا متعلقة بوفاة والدها واللغز وراء ذهابه الغريب وبين عملها كمرشدة نفسية في مدرسة ثانوية للفتيات وتتعامل مع مشاكلهن وتساعدهن لحلّها ثم تكتشف حقيقة النهاية الحزينة للرواية التي تكتب قصتها فتتدخل وتحاول للمرة الأولى أن تغيّر النهاية الحزينة لنهاية سعيدة على أرض الواقع وليس في أوراقها وحسب.
