في البدء كانت العائلة، وكان البيت، وكانت القيم، ومرت الأيام، لم تعد هناك عائلة، ولم يعد هناك بيت، واهتزت القيم وتفرق الجميع؛ وهذه الرواية تسجيل أمين لهذه اللحظة الحرجة.
من بين الأنقاض والحجارة، وإهتزاز الأحلام والقيم، تبني هذه الرواية التجريبية جسدها، ومن خلال المنولوج المرير مع الذات، نرى رد فعل هذه الأسرة "المتوسطة" المكونة، كما العادة، من سبعة أشخاص؛ إنها تنتظر ولا تفعل، تنتظر سقوط القيم التي كانت قد توارثتها ضمن ما ورثت في الصندوق القديم، وبدلاً من أن يتحمّل أفرادها مسؤوليتهم التاريخية، التي راهن الكثيرون من خارجها عليها، نراهم هنا، يتخلون عنها، يخونونها، ويستسلمون لأوضاعهم الطفيلية التي انزلقوا إليها مع حركة المجتمع.
ليس في هذه الرواية التجريبية، أحداث بالمعنى التقليدي، ولكننا نتابع ما يحدث، في الواقع وفي نفوس الأشخاص، من خلال مونولوج منفرد، فرضته حلولهم الفردية، يؤديه كل منهم على حدة.
والرواية تتبع بناء وتقسيماً أشبه بالعمل السيمفوني، حيث تتردد "الأصوات" جميعاً في فصل، ثم تنقسم إلى مجموعتين، ثم ينفرد كل "صوت" بفصل مستقل، ويتكرر اللحن، حتى يعزف الجميع لحن الختام الخريفي.
