في الثلاثينيّات من القرن العشرين، قدمت الكاتبة أغاثا كريستي من لندن إلى مدينة عاموداً في سوريا، حيث عاشت مع زوجها عالم الآثار ماكس مالوان لفترة من الزمن، وفيها كتبت يومياتها "تعال قل لي كيف تعيش" لتروي فيها صوراً من مغامرتها في الحياة في سوريا والعراق.
بعد أقل من مئة عام، اضطر هيثم حسين إلى الهجرة من مدينته الصغيرة عاموداً إلى دمشق ومنها إلى محطات متعددة: دبي وبيروت والقاهرة وإسطنبول، وصولاً إلى لندن حيث كتب فيها سيرته الروائية مجيباً أغاثا كريستي عن كيف يعيش، ويصور فيها مفارقات من رحلته للبحث عن ملاذ آمن له وللأسرته.
كلّ البلاد منافٍ بعد أن تهجر وطنك، وحياة اللاجئين عبارة عن دمية روسيّة تعيد محنتها، وتنتج مآسيها المتجدّدة تبعاً.
هذا ما عايشه الكاتب وحاول أن يلتقط بعضاً من تأثيراته في سيرته التي تمثل معبراً إلى أنفاق الذاكرة وكوّة لتظهير الذكريات، حيث الحياة بمستجدّاتها وتناقضاتها وغرائبها تبقى مصدر إيحاء وإلهام ومقاربة له، يترك باب موارياً على حكايات قد تكون شرارات لأخرى في متاهة الحياة نفسها.
