عندما بدأتُ رحلتي مع المبيعات، لم أكن أعلم شيئًا عن المهارات والأساليب التي سوف تتعلمها في هذا الكتاب، ولم أُنهِ دراستي الثانوية، ولكنني عملت في وظائف شاقة سنوات عديدة. وعندما لم أعد أستطيع أن أجد أي وظائف شاقة أخرى، لجأت في إحباط إلى العمل في مجال المبيعات بالعمولة الثابتة، حيث كنت أقوم بزيارات مفاجئة للعملاء، الواحد تلو الآخر، وذلك في النهار، أما في الليل فقد كنت أقوم بزيارة المنازل والشقق السكنية.
وحصلت على دورة المبيعات التدريبية المكونة من ثلاثة أجزاء، الشهيرة على مستوى العالم: "ها هي بطاقاتك، وها هي نشراتك، وها هو الباب".
وكان الأمر يتلخص في أنني إذا لم أحقق المبيعات، فلن أستطيع شراء قوتي. ولذا كنت أستيقظ كل صباح في تمام السادسة، منتظرًا في ساحة انتظار السيارات في الوقت الذي كان يأتي فيه الموظفون إلى العمل في تمام الثامنة، ولكن نتائج المبيعات التي كنت أحققها لم تكن مُرضيةً على الإطلاق؛ حيث كنت أحقق من المبيعات ما يكفي فقط لشراء قوت يومي، وسداد قيمة الغرفة التي أسكن فيها في النُّزُل، فضلًا عن أن حذائي كان باليًا، وجيوبي فارغة، دون أي مستقبل في الأفق.
