إلى مكان كان نائناً - ولعله لم يعد كذلك- يصحبنا محمد العشري في روايته الثالثة "تفاحة الصحراء" إلى منطقة العلمين وما حولها من صحرائنا العربية، وإذا قلنا "العلمين" تداعت إلى الذهن -على الفور- معركتها الشهيرة التي حولت ميزان الصراع في أكثر مراحل الحرب الثانية حرجاً. وليست "تفاحة الصحراء" بعيدة عن هذه الفترة من التاريخ الحديث. والحقيقة أنني وجدت في هذه الرواية القصيرة أكثر من وجه للتميز: أول هذه الوجوه أنها تتحرك على مستويين، لو صح التعبير، هما حاضر هذه المنطقة وماضيها، الحاضر هو هذا المشروع الذي تقوم به إحدى شركات النفط، ذات رأس المال المشترك والإدارة المشتركة، لاستكشاف إمكان استخراجه، والماضي هو أحداث الحرب العالمية في هذه المنطقة وما حولها. وثمة أكثر من رابط بين المستويين: "الشيخ عبد الرحمن" الذي كان شاباً صغيراً أثناء الحرب، يعمل ابنه بين العمال في البعثة الجيولوجية. إلى جانب هذا الرابط الإنساني ثمة الآثار التي خلفتها الحرب: المقبرة الشهيرة التي تضم رفات جنود الحلفاء. وحارسها الإيطالي "كيوديني" الذي يعاونه عبد الرحمن. والنصب الذي أمر "روميل" بإقامته تخليداً لذكرى أحد طياريه الأكفاء. وأهم من هذه وذاك: حقول الألغام الرهيبة، تفاحات الصحراء القاتلة، فهنا أكبر حقل ألغام في العالم، حقل "البويرات".. على بعد مائتين وخمسين كيلو متراً شرقي طرابلس، والذي زرع فيه "مونتجمري" مائة وخمسين ألف لغم، متأهباً للانفجار بشكل دائم، مانعاً الأرجل من الاقتراب منه، مزلزلاً الأرض تحت حوافر الحيوانات الضالة، ناثراً لحومها على الرمال..
