في 16 كانون الثاني (يناير/1979)، غادر الشاه إيران. كان هذا بعد يومين من حديث المثقف الأديب إحسان نراغي الذي أجراه معه. حيث حل في 11 شباط/فبراير، أي خلال أقل من شهر، حل النظام الإسلامي محل النظام الملكي. في هذا الكتاب يحاول نراغي كشف الخصوصيات النفسية لرجل ظل يعتبر لعدة عقود، أحد القادة الأكثر نفوذاً في العالم. وذلك على ضوء مذكراته ليأتي هذا الكتاب شهادة أمينة وصادقة قدر الإمكان.
وقد اعتمد أولاً وكمرجع، الملاحظات التي كان قد هيأها قبل كل مقابلة أجراها من الشاه، والتي كانت تشكل الركيزة لحواراته، كما أنه وجد تحت تصرفه أيضاً الملاحظات التي سجلها مستشارا الشاه (انتظام وصديقي) اللذان كانا قريبين إليه خلال الأيام المئة الأخيرة من حكمه حيث دوّن بكثير من الدقة فحوى هذه الأحاديث، إلى جانب مصادر أخرى اعتمدها لإخراج هذا الكتاب الذي لم تضم فقط أحاديثه مع الشاه بل وأيضاً ذكرياته في السجن حيث اعتقل نراغي مرتين وأودع السجن، في القسمين اللذين يحتويهما هذا الكتاب (القصر والسجن) ثابر نراغي (كمشتغلٍ في التاريخ) على نقل الأحداث بأمانة بعيداً عن أي حكم تقويمي وبعيداً عن أي روح انحيازية هدفه من وراء ذلك إظهار حقيقة الناس في جميع الظروف، سواء تعلق الأمر بالشاه، أو بالمناضل الثوري الذي كان على وشك أن يعدم، أو بالسجان، حيث أراد أن يفهم الناس كما هم، كما يجيئون إلى العالم كي يحبوا، يتعذبوا، ويموتوا.
