يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يوضح للقارئ، وخصوصاً للقارئ العربي، حقيقة الصورة المرسومة في مخيّلته عن المجتمع الكويتي الذي ما زال يتصوّر البعض أن كل فرد من أفراده يملك بئر نفط، ويعيش حياة بعيدة جداً عما تعيشه المجتمعات المحيطة، ولا سيما المجتمعات العربية. من ناحية أخرى فإن الكويتيين أضاعوا كثيراً من الفرص لبناء اقتصاد يستطيعون حمل هيكله بأقل ما يمكن من مساعدة الغير. ولم يقرأوا تاريخ الدول التي تعيش اليوم معاناة البطالة وتبعات التنمية بعد أن كانوا يرفلون بثوب رفاه أوسع منهم. هل الشهرة التي اكتسبوها كشعب نخبة مرفهة نابعة من واقع أم هو مجرد وهم عكسته سلوكيات من أطلق عليهم الغير في الخمسينيات بأن الكويت جوهرة الخليج. هذا ما تحاول هذه الدراسة أن ترسم صورته وفق تحليل علمي.
