يشير إسم الرواية إلى الشخصية الرئيسية فيها وهو شخصية تاريخية غير حقيقية، ويدور جزء من أحداثها في العصور المظلمة لأوروبا المسيحية، والبطل رجل مصري عربي يسعى لاكتشاف اصله- الذي يشك أنه يعود لنبيل أوروبي اغتصب أمه خلال غزوة صليبية للسواحل المصرية- فيسافر عكس اتجاه الحملات الصليبية، يسافر من السواحل العربية إلى جنوب أوروبا ماراً بقبرص والعديد من الجزر التي يسطير عليها أمراء الحروب الصليبية لينتهي به الحال في إيطاليا، عبر مجموعة من المغامرات تعرض للعلاقات المتشابكة الحربية والمدنية لسكان ضفتي المتوسط وتنير هذا المصري المسلم حول جذوره القبطية، ما يعقد رحلته ويزيدها درامية. وبالتوازي مع هذا الإبحار في المتوسط مع "ابن البيطار" يسافر بنا المؤلف مع البطل المعاصر "دانيال" الأثري المصري الذي يسافر إلى إيطاليا في رحلة علمية فيقع في غرام مساعدته الإيطالية ذات الجذور الشرقية، ويحمل اسم البطل دلالات متعددة، فهو اسم لمسجد في الاسكندرية ما يشي بجذوره البحرومتوسطية واسم لنبي يهودي ما يشير لاغتراب الوطن عن عالمه والتيه الذي يواجهه. وما بين سعي "دانيال" للنجاح في مهمته العلمية، التي نكتشف في النهاية أنها مرتبطة بأثر تركه ابن البيطار، ومحاولاته للهروب من ضغوط التيارات الدينية المتطرفة التي سيطرت على الساحة في مصر بعد ثورة يناير تنفجر الدراما التي تمثل إعادة بالمقلوب لقصة ابن البيطار.
