كتاب "طبيب عبر الزمن"، قد أورد المؤلف فيه سبع قصص شهيرة من التراث العربي لشخصيات أصيبت بمرض أدى إلى الوفاة، ودرس الرواية من الناحية التاريخية، ثم درسها من الناحية الطبية محاولاً تحديد نوع الأمراض التي أصيبوا بها. وفكرة الكتاب على حد قول الناشر "فكرة مبتكرة تمزج بين الرواية التاريخية الموثقة، والطب الحديث بأسلوب أدبي بليغ يجمع بين قوة المفردة وسلاسة الأسلوب". أما المؤلف الجابري فيقول عن عمله "ثمة زوايا كثيرة في تاريخنا العربي يلفها الغموض، وتتناولها كتب التاريخ والأدب بشكل يثير التساؤل، وبطريقة تبعث على الدهشة، لكنها قل أن تروي غليلا. وليس هذا الأمر سيئا دائما، بل كثيرا ما كانت هذه النقاط الغامضة ميدانا تتبارى فيه الأقلام، ويتسابق فيه الكتاب لبيان وجه الحقيقة، الذي يتوارى خلف بضعة أسطر، كتبها مؤرخ أو رواها أديب. وقد تختلف هذه الزوايا باختلاف القراء أنفسهم، فما لا يسترعي انتباه أحدهم يراه الآخر لغزا محيرا يكتنفه الغموض. ولم أكن بدعا من هؤلاء القراء، بل ثمة عديد من الأسئلة التي كانت تسترعي انتباهي، وتثير فضولي في أثناء القراءة في كتب التاريخ والأدب.
