كلُّ ما يَحدث الليلةَ غريبٌ تمامًا عليه، غرابةَ وجودِه في هذا المكان، جَلس الأسطى حَسَن في هذا العزاء المقام في جامع عُمَر مكرم وقد أصابته حالة من الذهول التام، عيناه لا تفارقانِ أضواء الكهارب وفخامة الأقمشة وكِمية النجَف المضاءة، وهو الذي كان يعاني شهريًا مِن دفْع فاتورة الكهرباء التي لا تتجاوز العشرين جنيهًا، كَمْ مَن المَبالغ سيتم دفعها مقابل هذه الكَمِّية الهائلة مِن الكهرباء! حتى الشيخ المُقرئ يتقاضى آلافَ الآلافِ مِن الجنيهات ليقرأ رُبعَ قرآن! كل هذه المَبالغ التي تُصرَف في ليلةٍ واحدة عاش عمرَه كله يحلم أن يمتلك رُبعها أو عُشرَها أو حتى يراها فقط رؤية العين. لم يكن حَسن يتصور أنه يومًا ما سيدخل هذا المكان أو يمُر حتى قريبًا منه، فعندما يكون هناك مأتَم فإن الحرَس والسيارات الفارهة التي يَخرج منها بشر ليس لهم علاقة بعالَمِه يمنعون مرور البسطاء، أو ربما كان البسطاء أنفسُهم يخافون المرورَ بجوارهم.
