يقول المؤلف: «في هذا الكتاب أنا منشغل بسيد قطب كله، تحولاته العديدة، وتقلباته في حياته الخاصة، كان ناقدًا أدبيًّا واعدًا ثم انقلب على النقد، وكان ماسونيًّا متحمسًا في المحفل الماسوني الأكبر ويفخر بماسونيته ثم يصبح إسلاميًّا تكفيريًّا ورافضًا للآخرين على طول الخط، وكان يكره حسن البنا ويمقته، حتى أطلق عليه لقب «حسن الصباح»، زعيم الحشاشين، ثم يعود ليصفه بالعبقري، وكان مفتونًا بطه حسين ويريد أن يصير مثله، ثم ينقلب عليه ويتهمه بأنه تلميذ المستشرقين الكارهين للإسلام. وفي سنوات الأربعينيات بدا متشيعًا بتطرف، حتى وبخه الشيخ شاكر على ذلك بعنف، ويخفف سيد تشيعه ليأخذ بأفكار الخوارج قتلة علي بن أبي طالب. يرصد هذا الكتاب تلك التحولات والانقلابات في حياة وعقل سيد قطب من موقع البحث والدراسة، رفضًا لأسطرة الرجل والدخول به إلى عالم الكمال المطلق والقداسة، ورفضًا كذلك لشيطنته واعتباره ناقدًا أدبيًّا وقع اختيار المخابرات الأمريكية عليه لإعداده وتجهيزه بمشروع التكفير وزرع الأصوليين في مجتمعنا وبلادنا».
