لقد اقتربتُ من النص بروحي وقلبي أكثر مما اقتربت منه بعقلي، ولعل هذا هو أحد التناقضات الأساسية في الإنسان والتي كشف عنها الكتاب. ترجمة «جيا-فو فنج» و«جين إنجلش» الإنجليزية التي نقلتُ عنها هي ترجمة بسيطة جميلة، تعمدت تقريب الكلمات القديمة في النص إلى البسطاء، وهي ترجمة حية ومباشرة لنص غاية في القِدم». «أقدمتُ على ترجمة هذا النص في فترة ارتبكت فيها حياتي: هزائم خاصة، وهزائم عامة، وارتباك في الفكر والسلوك. وكان لهذه الترجمة تأثيرها: لا أقول عالجت الموقف، ولكنها أضاءت بعض جوانبه، ودعتني إلى الاعتدال والبساطة في تناول الحياة.«لو تسو» المؤلف هو رفيق «كونفوشيوس» الكبير، لكن بينما تهتم الكونفوشيوسية بسلوك البشر في الحياة اليومية، تُخاطب الطاوية جانبًا أكثر روحانية في حياة الإنسان.
