الكتابة عن الكتابة لا تغني شيئًا عند أقوام رأَوا الكتابةَ محضَ إلهام ومَوهبة، وأن النصَّ يتطور من تلقاء نفسه، وما الكتابة فيها إلا قبض رياح، وبضد هؤلاء من ظن أن الكاتب يتبع وصفة معينة، تشبه القاعدة السّرية التي يودُّ النّاس اكتشافها... الكتابة موهبة وطَبع، وهي مع هذا قابلة للتعلُّم إذا صاحب ذلك جهد وكدّ في معالجة النص... الكتابة عن الكتابة وأسسها لا يعني البرهنة على أن ما يُكتب على هذا المنهاج أو ذاك هو شيء جيِّد بالضّرورة، فقد يكتب من لا يتبع الطرق المنهجية أجمل الكلمات... الكتابة عن الكتابة تصحيحًا لشيوع الكتابة وشروع أبوابها، فلم يسبق أن أتيح للنّاس سبل الكتابة والنشر بأيسر طريق... الكتابة عن الكتابة تسهيلاً لشداتها وطلابها، وتسديدًا لتلك الخطوات المتعثرة... كنت وما زلت أحد الشداة في الكتابة، أحاول تلمُّس الطريق، وفي أثناء ذلك كنت أطالع سِيَر العلماء والكُتَّاب، فأقيد ما يمر عليَّ، وتتداعى لي خواطر تكمل النقص، فلَمَمت هذه التجاربَ وغيرها في هذه الورقات، عسى أن تكون مقدمة في تأسيس خطوات ممنهجة للكتابة... الممارسات الممكنة للكتابة كثيرة التنوع والاختلاف، ويمكن الإشارة إلى بعضها من خلال الأسئلة التالية:

هذا الكتاب لن يقدِّم أي وصفة أو تمارين تطبيقية عن كيفية الكتابة في أجناس المعرفة المختلفة، خلا توجيهات عامة، وحسبي أن يكون دليلاً على الطّريق، لا شارحًا لما يمر به من معالم، وأن أشعل النّار، لا أن أنضج الطّعام...
