في قلب تمبولاند، بجنوب أفريقيا، كان هناك بيت كبير أطلق السكان المحليون عليه " المكان العظيم". هنا عاش "يونجينتابا"، الذي كان ملكًا، وكان المكان العظيم هو منزله الملكي.
في هذا اليوم عام ١٩٢٧، كان "يونجينتابا" يعقد اجتماعًا قبليًّا، وكان الرجال يتحدثون عن أمور مهمة، وأيضا كان بالغرفة فتى صغير يعيش منذ فترة قصيرة في المكان العظيم. كان عمره تسع سنوات، وبعد أن مات والد الطفل، كفله الملك.
استمع الفتى للرجال وهم يتحدثون فيما كان يراقب الرجل الذي يقوم بتربيته. لم يكن الملك يتكلم، بل كان يستمع، فقد كان يعتقد أن لكل شخص الحق في أن يكون له صوت في مملكته، أيا كان هذا الشخص.
وحينما أحس بأن الناس قد قالوا كل ما كانوا بحاجة إلى قوله، أبدى الملك رأيه، وكان هذا النهج مختلفًا تمامًا عن الطريقة التي كانت تُحكم بها دولة جنوب أفريقيا.
جنوب أفريقيا دولة تقع في الجزء الجنوبي الأسفل من القارة الأفريقية، ومساحتها تبلغ تقريبا ضعف مساحة ولاية تكساس، ولأمد من الزمن، حكم جنوب أفريقيا الملوك السود، ثم حكمها المستوطنون البيض القادمون من أوروبا؛ حيث انتزعوا الأراضي لأنفسهم وأحكموا سيطرتهم على الدولة. وبحلول أواخر القرن التاسع عشر، لم يعد لأهل جنوب أفريقيا من السود أي صوت في الحكومة. وعندما جاء الفتى للعيش مع الشخص الجديد الذي سيقوم بتربيته، كان هناك حوالي ستة ملايين نسمة في جنوب أفريقيا - أربعة ملايين منهم كانوا سودا.
وبالرغم من ذلك لم يكونوا حقًّا مواطنين في بلدهم، فلم يكن في استطاعتهم أن يقوموا بالتصويت، بل يمكنهم أن يعيشوا حيثما تسمح لهم الحكومة بذلك فحسب، وحتى الملوك مثل "يونجينتابا" لم تكن لديهم سلطة حقيقية.
بينما كان الفتى ذو التسعة أعوام يراقب اجتماع الرجل الذي يقوم بتربيته، كان يحلم بجنوب أفريقيا مختلفة: دولة يكون لكل الناس فيها من كل الألوان صوت؛ حيث الجميع أحرار ومتساوون - كان يتمنى تحقيق ذلك حينما يكبر.
كان اسم الفتى "نيلسون مانديلا". ويوما ما سيغير جنوب أفريقيا - يوما ما سيغير العالم.
