ويروي الكتاب كيف سطر هذا الرجل العظيم اسمه بأحرف من ذهب فى كتب التاريخ ، بعد أن كرس حياته للنضال ضد سياسة التمييز العنصرى فى بلاده جنوب افريقيا، وظل فى السجن 28 عاما، من أجل الحرية والعدل ، إلى أن تحقق ذلك ، على يديه بعد أن أطلق صراحه ، وأصبح رئيسا أسود في دولة لم تعرف سوى اللون الأبيض الذي فرضته على الأغلبية السوداء دهرا .
وفي الكتاب أيضا سنتعرف على العوامل التي جعلت من هذا الثائر الأكبر رمزا للمصالحة الوطنية في العالم بعد أن آخى بين البيض والسود ، واستطاع أن يقنع شعبه الأسود بأن الانتقام سوف لا يفيد ، وأن بناء الوطن يحتاج إلى التسامح ونسيان الماضي بكل تجاربه المريرة ، حتى يتطلع الجميع ومعا نحو المستقبل ، وقد كان وأصبحت جنوب إفريقيا مانديلا دولة كبرى كما نراها الآن ."
