في عام ١٦٦٥، اجتاح إنجلترا مرض مروع، كان يُعرف بالطاعون، كان يسبب تورمًا هائلًا بجميع أجزاء الجسم، ويحول لون جلد المصاب إلى اللون الأسود. ولم يكن هناك علاج له؛ لذلك سرعان ما توفي معظم من أصيبوا به بعد صراع مع هذا المرض، وكان أي مكان مزدحم بالناس يشكل خطرًا,
وذلك لأن انتقال الطاعون من شخص إلى آخر كان سهلًا جدًّا. ولم يكن أحد يعرف سببه، أو كيفية الوقاية منه، وكانت الطريقة الوحيدة للبقاء في مأمن من هذا المرض هي الذهاب إلى الريف؛ حيث يعيش عدد أقل من السكان، ومن ثم تقل مصادر العدوى.
وقد دفع مرض الطاعون بالطالب "إسحاق نيوتن" ذي الثلاثة والعشرين عامًا إلى ترك جامعة كامبريدج والهرب للعيش في منزل أمه الريفي، ولم يمانع على الإطلاق في أن يفعل ذلك؛ لأنه دائمًا ما كان وحيدًا، ولم يكن لديه أي أصدقاء يمكن أن يفتقدهم. وفي منزل والدته، كان يقضي الوقت في فعل أفضل ما يفعله دومًا، وهو التفكير في أمر الكون.
وذات يوم رأى "نيوتن" تفاحة تسقط من شجرة؛ فبدأ يتساءل عما جذب التفاحة للسقوط في اتجاه الأرض؛ وهكذا ووفقًا للقصة الشهيرة (التي قد تكون صحيحة)، توصل الشاب "إسحاق نيوتن" إلى فكرة الجاذبية.
كانت سنوات انتشار الطاعون فترة عصيبة على معظم الناس، لكنها لم تكن كذلك بالنسبة إلى "نيوتن"، بل كانت فترة مذهلة من التوصل إلى اكتشافات؛ فالأمر لم يقتصر على توصله إلى فكرة الجاذبية فحسب، لكنه كذلك توصل إلى أفكار جديدة كافية لشغله في التفكير والكتابة لبقية حياته؛ تلك الأفكار التي ساعدت الناس على فهم كيفية عمل الكون بطريقة جديدة.
وبعد ثمانية عشر شهرًا، عاد "نيوتن" إلى جامعة كامبريدج، لكنه لم يكوَّن قط العديد من الصداقات؛ فقد كان غيورًا، وغير ودود، وسهل الانفعال، كما لم يكن شخصًا لطيفًا، لكنه كان واحدًا من أعظم عباقرة العلم الذين عاشوا يومًا على ظهر هذا الكوكب.
